One Degree - Creating a cool change for Fiji

Cool Change Initiative

When 1 Degree turned 1 on June 25th 2008, we wanted it to be a celebration with a difference. So all our publications got together and turned June into Cool Change month.

Because June included not just 1 Degree's 1st birthday but also World Environment Day (on the 5th), all Fiji Times publications put renewed focus on local environmental and climate change initiatives.

We did this because while there is much to be done to prevent the earth's temperatures rising to unsustainable levels, there is also much to celebrate, in terms of the type of work that everyday people are doing every day in Fiji.

Cool Change LogoIn the words of Fiji Times managing director Evan Hannah: "We strongly believe that if every person made one degree of change in their life in support of the environment, Fiji, the Pacific and the planet will be better off".

As our editor-in-chief Netani Rika says it's part of The Fiji Times' commitment towards ensuring a better future for everyone living here and generations yet to come.

"We want you to act on the possibilities available in terms of how every person can have a positive effect on our environment – whether it be in your school, home, community, suburb or workplace".

"As your partner in saving the environment and our planet, we will provide as much information as possible for individuals and groups to act and provide recognition for such initiatives through our publications. Together we can make a big difference to the type of environmental future we choose to have."
