What is 1 Degree?

How many of us know enough about climate change to start making a real difference to the fate of our planet? It was this that spurred The Fiji Times - the biggest newspaper in the South Pacific Island region - to throw its resources behind the 1 Degree initiative - which was first launched on June 25, 2007.

Our goal is to help empower individuals, our staff, families, and communities to take charge of the climate change issue – and by doing so, change our collective future.

You see, 1 Degree was originally designed as an in-house program by Fiji Times parent body News Limited. In Fiji, the campaign grew wings when the company decided to not just take on the principles itself, but to share that climate change knowledge with as many readers as possible.

Climate change is not some obscure idea known only to scientists. It’s a very real issue that has real consequences for people living in Fiji and across the small island states spread throughout the Pacific.

Everything from the electricity we use, to the fuel in our cars, the carbon impacts of air travel, the heating and cooling of our buildings and the way we handle our waste and recycling affects what sort of carbon footprint we leave on our planet - and what sort of impact we will have on global warming.

The Fiji Times, as part of News Limited, which itself is part of the global News Corporation, has made a commitment - to be carbon neutral by 2010; that is, we will no longer be a company that contributes to global warming.

But while the changes we are making will help reduce our carbon footprint, we are just a small part of the overall picture.

To really make an impact, we need you to join us. Imagine what type of future we could all deliver if every person made one degree of change to help the planet? We believe it would see in a much better future for us all.

In fact, the future of our children and the type of environment they will inherit from us depends completely on what sort of effort we put in today towards positive climate change action. It really is a case of the little things that matter when it comes to global warming.

Numerous small changes from thousands of people across Fiji, the Pacific region and the planet that will see in a new future. And the surprising element is that the action you take - including something as simple as switching off unused power points and lights - will deliver financial savings for you immediately.
