One Degree - Creating a cool change for Fiji

Climate & weather

Weather is all around us and may be one of the first things you notice when you wake up. If it's cold you'll obviously wear a jacket and if it's hot and sunny, you'll probably wear shorts and a t-shirt.

Sounds pretty straight forward right? Well, what about climate? How is it different from weather? And what exactly is weather?

Weather

Weather describes whatever is happening outdoors in a given place at a given time. Weather is what happens from minute to minute and weather can change a lot within a very short time. For example, it may rain for an hour and then become sunny and clear. We are updated on it every night on the evening news and every hour on the radio. Weather includes daily changes in precipitation (Pre·ci·pi·ta·tion) which is rain, hail, mist, sun or storm, or any other moisture that falls to the Earth, barometric pressure (Bar·o·me·tric Pres·sure.) The pressure of the atmosphere (usually expressed in terms of the height of a column of mercury), temperature, and wind conditions in a given location. What is your weather like today?  Have a look out your window and see how it changes 6 hours from now.  It's very interesting to say the least.

Climate

Climate describes the total of all weather occurring over a period of years in a given place. This includes average weather conditions, regular weather sequences (like winter, spring, summer, and fall), and special weather events (like floods and cyclones).

Climate tells us what it's usually like in the place where you live.
